Treating Excessive Chlorine in Drinking Water
How Much Is Too Much?
The existence of chlorine in drinking water isn’t as uncommon as you may think. Frequently used by municipal water treatment facilities to kill bacteria, it is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency that over 65% of all community water systems use chlorine to disinfect their water.
Yet, the Environmental Defense Fun cites chlorine in drinking water as one of the most toxic, and potentially cancer-causing, chemicals. Why?
Trace amounts of chlorine (that is, up to 4 milligrams per liter) are considered by the EPA as perfectly safe, with no harmful health effects to be expected. However, some people are more sensitive to chlorine than others. Further, the U.S. General Accounting Office has reported that up to 75% of water treatment plants in the United States may have deficiencies, leading to unsafe water being delivered to both homes and commercial facilities.
While the use of chlorine has been shown to reduce the risk of infectious disease due to waterborne pathogens, a number of recent epidemiological studies reveal a link between water chlorination and an increased risk for certain types of cancer.
